East Village Studio Session | Abstract Expressionism: Franz Kline

  • 311 East 3rd Street New York, NY, 10009 United States (map)

“The real thing about creating is to have the capacity to be embarrassed.” - Franz Kline

Franz Kline was a painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement in New York City in the 1940s & 50s. Like his contemporary, Jackson Pollock, he worked in a style known as action painting- meaning his work is defined by movement and the physical act of painting itself. His work is typically characterized by its minimalist black and white color scheme, though he worked with color at different points in his career.

Learn about Franz Kline’s life and inspiration and create a gestural, minimalist, abstract work in his style.
