Dupont Studio Session: Rethinking the Renaissance Genius

  • ArtsClub DC 1506 19th Street Northwest Washington, DC, 20036 United States (map)

Explore what it meant to be a “genius” during the Renaissance and learn how to paint using Leonardo da Vinci’s seductive sfumato technique.

Raphael, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo—what’s behind their purported “genius?” This lesson explores the cult of the genius, how it is deeply rooted in Renaissance culture, and why it limits our understanding of the period.

Then you’ll learn to paint a landscape using the hazy technique popularized by Leonardo da Vinci, sfumato, which softened the edges of figures and objects to simulate the atmospheric effects of real, physical space.
